These resilient plants have a unique ability to adapt to a wide range of growing conditions, making them a favorite among orchid enthusiasts.

1. Origin - 

The name “dendrobium” comes from the ancient Greek word “dendros” which means “tree” and “bios” meaning life.. Dendrobium orchids can be found all the way from tropical rainforests to high mountain regions, each region having different habitats and requirements. In their natural habitat, dendrobium orchids cling to trees and rocks. Their leaves are often small and narrow, allowing them to soak up the sunlight that filters through the dense canopy above. But even in these harsh conditions, dendrobiums flourish. Their blooms, which can range in color from pure white to vibrant pink, burst in a riot of color, defying the odds and proving the resilience of nature.

2. Lighting -

Light is a key factor for dendrobium orchids to thrive, they love bright, indirect light, just like in their native environment. But, too much direct sunlight can burn their delicate petals as well as their leaves. This is usually a great scenario for houseplant enthusiasts, however, due to indoor environments sometimes being a difficult place to suit extreme bright light conditions. If you still think your home is too dark to support dendrobiums, grow lights are a great way to mitigate this issue altogether. 

3. Watering - 

Dendrobium orchids have a reputation for being drought-tolerant due to their stems being made of specialized structures called pseudobulbs. These bulbous growths act as water storage for the plant, allowing it to survive through dry spells. But, that doesn’t mean you should neglect watering them. They appreciate consistent moisture, and without proper watering, their blooms may suffer or may even take on a period of dormancy.

4. Soil Conditions -

Soil is a key component to keeping your dendrobium orchid happy. Like many orchids, dendrobiums grow on the sides of trees and other bark material in the wild. For houseplant enthusiasts, these orchids can be grown in a personalized potting mix or mounted on a piece of wood or cork. Make sure to note the type of bark and/or moss mixture that your dendrobium orchid comes in, as it will be used to this type of environment when you transition it out of it’s nursery pot. 

5. Reproduction - 

Dendrobium orchids are unique in the way they reproduce. Many varieties of dendrobiums are epiphytic, which means that they grow on other plants without drawing nourishment from them. Instead, they absorb moisture and nutrients through their pseudobulbs. And it is from these pseudobulbs that new growth and blooms emerge, a true testament to the ingenuity of these beautiful flowers.

6. Humidity - 

If you have ever owned any orchids, you know that they care about humidity. Consistent watering is great for aiding in the humidity around your plant, but it is not always enough. Dendrobiums like to be in a 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit temperature range, however, since we don’t really enjoy that warm of a temperature in our homes, humidifiers are great for adding near your orchid to give the overall air more moisture. In the Hampton Roads area, place your dendrobium outside in the shade during the spring and summer months to see some serious growth. 

7. Feeding - 

Like all other plants, nutrients are essential to plant growth. This is no different for dendrobium orchids. However, when potted in just bark and a little moss, as it needs for the correct drainage, it does miss out on some nutrients over time.
