The holiday season is here, and there’s nothing quite like the sight (and smell) of a fresh-cut Christmas tree to bring the magic of the season to life. Picking the right one is an art—and a fun tradition here at our year-round locations. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know to find the tree that will light up your home and your holidays.
Step 1: Dream Big, Plan Smart
Before heading out, picture where your tree will take center stage. Is it a grand living room with high ceilings, or a cozy corner perfect for something petite? Measure your space, including ceiling height and width, and don’t forget to account for the tree topper. A little planning ensures your tree fits like a holiday dream.
Pro Tip: Avoid placing your tree near fireplaces, radiators, or sunny windows—heat sources can dry it out quickly, leaving you with a less-than-festive mess.
Step 2: Why Fraser Firs Are the Holiday MVP
When it comes to fresh-cut Christmas trees, the Fraser Fir is a fan favorite for good reason. With its perfect pyramid shape, strong branches, and soft, silvery-green needles, it’s as sturdy as it is beautiful. This tree has excellent needle retention, making it a top pick for those who want their tree to look fresh all season long.
If you love hanging heavy ornaments, the Fraser Fir is up to the task. Its branches can handle everything from delicate heirlooms to oversized baubles, all while filling your home with that classic evergreen scent.
Step 3: The Tree Inspection
Once you’ve found a beautiful Fraser Fir, take a closer look to ensure it’s as fresh as it appears:
- Needle Test: Gently run your fingers along a branch. The needles should feel soft and stay attached, not scatter like confetti.
- Color Check: Look for vibrant, silvery-green needles without any browning or dull spots.
- Shape Up: Step back and check the tree’s symmetry. Does it have a straight trunk? Is it full all around? Even the best trees may have a "bald spot" or two—just turn that side toward the wall!
Step 4: Bringing Your Tree Home
Now that you’ve found the one, it’s time to bring it home safely. Our Green Team will get your tree squared away before travelling home:
- We cut the tree “cookie” or a small slice off the base of the tree so you have a fresh cut before placing it in water. Then we cut any stray branches off the bottom to clean it up.
- We then give the tree a little shake to make sure extra needles are not coming home with you.
- Then we can help secure it tightly to your vehicle with the trunk facing forward to protect the branches during transport.
Once home, place it in water immediately, if you don’t have a fresh cut tree stand - ask our Green Team about them before heading home!
Step 5: Keeping Your Tree Merry and Bright
To keep your Fraser Fir looking fabulous through the holiday season:
- Use a sturdy tree stand that holds at least a gallon of water, and check the water level daily.
- Stick to plain water—no need for sugar or additives.
- Keep the room slightly cooler to extend the tree’s life and keep it looking fresh.
Step 6: Deck the Halls!
With your Fraser Fir in place, it’s time for the best part—decorating! String your lights from the trunk outward, add your favorite ornaments, and top it off with something special. Choose LED lights to reduce heat and protect your tree from drying out.
Choosing a fresh-cut Christmas tree is more than just a holiday task—it’s a memory waiting to be made. With a little care, your Fraser Fir will fill your home with beauty, joy, and the spirit of the season. Happy tree hunting, and Merry Christmas!
