The weather in Hampton Roads is starting to warm up, which means it’s a perfect time to get out in the garden with both our newest varieties of plants, as well as those tried and true favorites. Big, bright blooms give your landscape and patio loads of personality and the best part about adding in annuals is that it is completely customizable. We have collected some of our most popular annual blooms of the season for you to keep on your radar when plotting out your spring annual garden.   

This week we are admiring the man that started it all, our founder, Eddie Anderson. McDonald Garden Center has been locally owned and operated for over 75 years and this legacy could not have happened without the passion of growing, selling, and educating the community of Hampton Roads from Mr. Anderson.

To help make the process even easier, we have collected some spring tips that you can check off your to-do list this national gardening month.   

One of the most fabulous aspects of spring is the wide variety of blooms and foliage that we see coming into the garden center everyday. In houseplants, we get most excited about the fern shipment full of bright green foliage as far as the eye can see. Ferns seem simple, but are they really?

One of the most important aspects of spring that is often overlooked is mulch! Keeping your garden beds mulched not only looks good but helps your plants and trees from attracting pests and disease throughout the years. Spring is a great time to re-mulch your beds because you are also planting up new annuals and even redoing your landscape altogether.  

Spring is coming into bloom and that means that our beloved McDonald Garden Markets will be starting up in a neighborhood near you! Each spring, our Markets provide a piece of the plants, products, and education that our year-round locations have to offer. As we enter our 12th season, we have asked our owner, Mark Anderson, for his perspective on our Garden Markets. 

Spring is on the horizon and we are gearing up for our favorite season of the year here at the garden center. As these cooler months warm-up, it is important to prep for spring blooms and edible gardens by knowing the right steps to achieve the perfect spring garden.  Some things that you will need to start thinking about:
